Central Algarve: Faro and Loule

Administrative and commercial heart of the Algarve, combining the regional capital with the traditional market town of Loule.

The central Algarve, anchored by the regional capital Faro and the inland market town of Loule, forms the administrative and commercial heart of the region. Faro is home to the international airport, the University of the Algarve, the regional hospital, and most government offices. The old town (Cidade Velha) within its medieval walls contains the cathedral, the archaeological museum, and a handful of restaurants and shops that retain a quiet, lived-in character distinct from the tourist strips elsewhere. The Ria Formosa lagoon stretches east from Faro, providing a protected natural habitat visible from the waterfront. Loule, fifteen kilometres inland, is known for its Saturday morning market, one of the finest in the Algarve, held in a neo-Moorish market hall. The town has a working character that the coastal resorts lack, with local businesses, a busy commercial centre, and a strong sense of community. Loule municipality extends south to the coast at Vilamoura and Quarteira, making it one of the most economically diverse councils in the region. This central area is where most administrative tasks are completed, from tax office visits to hospital appointments, and it is the most practical base for anyone who needs regular access to services.
