Lagoa and Carvoeiro
Photogenic cliff coastline with the intimate resort of Carvoeiro and the famous Benagil sea cave.
Lagoa municipality, between Portimao and Albufeira, contains some of the Algarve's most photogenic coastline. Carvoeiro, the main coastal settlement, is a small resort built around a sandy cove enclosed by low cliffs. It has a village feel that larger resorts have lost, with a concentration of restaurants and bars around the beach square. The Algar Seco rock formations and boardwalk to the east of the village are a popular attraction. Benagil, a few kilometres further east, is famous for its sea cave (Algar de Benagil), whose collapsed roof creates a natural skylight above a hidden beach, one of the most photographed spots in Portugal. The cave is accessible by boat, kayak, or paddleboard from Benagil beach. Lagoa town itself sits a few kilometres inland, a quiet administrative centre with a church, a small museum, and local services. The municipality also includes the wine-producing area around the cooperative winery, which produces some of the Algarve's better wines. The Nobel International School at Porches attracts expat families to the area. Carvoeiro and the surrounding coastline offer a middle ground between the bustle of Albufeira and the quieter eastern Algarve, with good beaches, reasonable services, and a more relaxed pace.
