Western Algarve: Lagos and Portimao
Historic Lagos and commercial Portimao bookend the Algarve's most dramatic coastline of golden cliffs and sea caves.
The western Algarve's two main towns offer distinct characters. Lagos, with its compact old town, dramatic cliff coastline, and strong historical identity as the departure point for the Age of Discovery, attracts a younger and more independent-minded visitor and resident population. The marina, the old town bars, and the spectacular beaches of Dona Ana, Camilo, and Meia Praia give Lagos a lively energy. Portimao is more workaday, a commercial and fishing town whose waterfront praia da rocha strip is one of the Algarve's most developed tourist zones. The Arade river estuary separates Portimao from Ferragudo, a quieter fishing village that has retained more traditional character. Portimao's fish restaurants along the riverfront, where sardines are grilled over charcoal, are among the best in the Algarve. The town has the western Algarve's main hospital (Centro Hospitalar do Barlavento Algarvio), shopping centres, and transport connections. Between the two towns, the coastline is among the most photographed in Europe, with sea stacks, grottoes, and golden limestone cliffs. The western Algarve tends to attract residents who value character over convenience, accepting longer drives to Faro in exchange for a more distinctive setting.
