English-medium schools and their curricula
The Algarve has several international schools offering education in English, catering to the region's substantial expat community and to Portuguese families who want their children to have an English-language education. These schools vary in size, curriculum, and cost, and choosing the right one is a significant decision for families moving to the region.
The Nobel International School, with its main campus at Lagoa near Porches, is the largest and most established international school in the Algarve. It offers education from nursery to year 13, following the English National Curriculum through to IGCSEs and A-levels. The school has a multi-national student body and facilities including science laboratories, sports fields, a swimming pool, and a performing arts centre. Fees range from approximately 5,000 to 12,000 euros per year depending on the year group.
The Algarve International School (AISI), located between Porches and Lagoa, is a smaller school serving ages three to eleven. It follows the English National Curriculum and has a family atmosphere with small class sizes. The school is popular with families in the central Algarve.
Aljezur International School serves the western Algarve and Costa Vicentina, offering English-medium education in a more rural setting. Its small size means very individual attention for each pupil.
Vale Verde International School in Lagos provides education in English for children from nursery age upward, and is the main option for families in the western Algarve.
Other smaller schools and educational groups operate across the region, some offering Montessori, Waldorf, or other alternative pedagogies. The landscape changes periodically, with schools opening and closing, so checking current options at the time of a move is advisable.
International school fees in the Algarve are lower than in Lisbon or London but still represent a significant expense for families. Annual fees typically range from 4,000 to 12,000 euros per year, with additional costs for uniforms, materials, extracurricular activities, and school meals. Some schools offer sibling discounts. Bursaries and scholarships are available at some institutions but are not widespread.
The advantages of international schools include continuity of English-language education, smaller class sizes, a multinational peer group, and curricula that are recognised internationally for university admissions. The disadvantage is cost, and some argue that children who attend international schools integrate less fully into Portuguese life and culture than those who attend state schools.
Many families adopt a pragmatic approach: younger children are placed in Portuguese state schools where they acquire the language quickly, while older children who have already completed several years of English-medium education are placed in international schools to maintain continuity for exams. There is no single right answer, and the best choice depends on the child's age, temperament, language ability, and the family's plans for the future.
Transport to international schools is an important consideration, as schools are often not located near public transport routes. Most international schools operate their own bus services, covering routes across the central Algarve, with collection and drop-off points along the main roads. Bus fees are additional to tuition and typically cost 1,000 to 2,000 euros per year depending on distance. Some families prefer to drive, forming informal carpools with other parents in their area.
The social environment at international schools is by nature transient, with families arriving and departing as work assignments and life circumstances change. This can be both an advantage, as children learn to make friends quickly and develop cultural adaptability, and a challenge, as close friendships may be disrupted by departures. The schools are aware of this dynamic and typically provide pastoral support and transition programmes for new and departing students.
