Post Offices (CTT) in the Algarve

Postal services, parcels, and the many other functions of CTT

CTT (Correios de Portugal) is the national postal service, and its offices across the Algarve provide a wider range of services than many newcomers expect. Beyond sending letters and parcels, CTT offices function as a one-stop shop for various administrative and financial transactions.

CTT post offices are found in all Algarve towns and many villages. Larger offices in Faro, Portimao, Lagos, Albufeira, and Loule have multiple service counters and extended hours. Smaller village offices may have limited hours, sometimes operating only on weekday mornings. Queue times can be long, particularly at popular branches; arriving early or using the online queuing system (SenhaOnline) where available is advisable.

Postal services include standard and registered letter delivery (domestic and international), parcel sending and collection, and express courier services. International letter delivery to the UK typically takes five to seven working days by standard post. Parcels can be sent via CTT's own express service or through partner carriers. International parcel costs vary by weight and destination but are competitive with other European postal services.

Beyond mail, CTT offices provide numerous additional services. These include payment of bills (electricity, water, telecoms, tax), purchase and top-up of mobile phone credit, purchase of Via Verde toll transponders and prepaid toll cards, issuance of postal orders, and sale of fishing licences. CTT also operates a basic banking service (Banco CTT), with savings accounts, loans, and insurance products available at post office counters.

Package collection from online retailers is increasingly routed through CTT's network of lockers (CTT Lockers) and pickup points (pontos de recolha) in shops and service stations. Amazon, AliExpress, and other international retailers ship to Portugal via CTT or partner carriers, and collection from a pickup point is often more convenient than home delivery, particularly for residents who are out during delivery hours.

For residents receiving post, a notable difference from the UK is that door-to-door delivery is less reliable in rural areas and some newer developments. A post office box (apartado) can be rented at the local CTT office for a small annual fee and provides a secure and consistent delivery point. In some urbanisations and apartment blocks, communal mailboxes serve the same purpose.

Stamps (selos) can be purchased at post offices, some tabacarias (tobacconists), and online. A standard letter to the UK costs approximately 1.00 to 1.20 euros. The Portuguese postal system is generally reliable for standard correspondence, though delivery times are slower than in the UK.

The CTT network has faced the same pressures as postal services across Europe, including declining letter volumes, competition from private couriers for parcel delivery, and the need to maintain a physical branch network in an increasingly digital world. Some smaller village post offices have been closed or had their hours reduced. The CTT Pontos network of partner outlets in shops and service stations partially compensates, providing basic postal services in locations where a full post office is no longer viable.

For residents sending and receiving parcels from the UK, customs declarations are required since Brexit for items above certain value thresholds. This adds complexity and potential cost (in the form of import VAT and duty) to receiving goods ordered from UK online retailers. Understanding the customs rules and keeping records of purchases helps avoid unexpected charges on delivery.
