COVID-19 Pandemic Halts Tourism
2020
The global COVID-19 pandemic brought the Algarve's tourism-dependent economy to an abrupt standstill in March 2020. Faro Airport effectively closed, hotels shut, restaurants emptied, and the beaches that normally attract millions of visitors stood deserted. The economic impact was severe. The Algarve's unemployment rate, historically among the highest in Portugal, spiked dramatically. Thousands of seasonal workers lost their income, and many businesses, particularly small restaurants and tour operators, did not survive. The Portuguese government introduced support measures, but the scale of the Algarve's dependence on tourism made it one of the worst-affected regions in Europe. Recovery began in 2021 as vaccination programmes enabled a gradual reopening, and by 2022 tourist numbers had broadly returned to pre-pandemic levels. The experience prompted renewed discussion about the risks of economic over-reliance on tourism and the need for diversification.
