Faro Airport Opens to Commercial Traffic

1965

The opening of Faro Airport in 1965 marked the beginning of the Algarve's transformation from a remote agricultural and fishing region into one of Europe's major tourist destinations. The airport enabled direct charter flights from northern Europe, bringing package holiday visitors who had previously been unable to reach the region conveniently. The first international flights connected Faro to London and other European capitals. Within a decade, the tourism industry had overtaken fishing and agriculture as the region's primary economic activity. Hotels, apartment complexes, and tourist infrastructure began to spread along the coast, particularly around Albufeira, Vilamoura, and the western beaches. The airport has been expanded several times since 1965 and now handles over nine million passengers annually, the vast majority of them tourists. The original terminal has been replaced by modern facilities, though the airport's single runway continues to constrain capacity during peak summer months.
