Caldas de Monchique

Historic Site, Algarve News

Caldas de Monchique is a small thermal spa village nestled in a wooded valley in the Serra de Monchique. The hot springs have been used since Roman times and were a fashionable destination for the Portuguese aristocracy in the nineteenth century. After a period of decline, the spa was renovated in the early 2000s and now offers thermal treatments, a boutique hotel, and a collection of artisan shops and cafes in restored village buildings. The setting, surrounded by chestnut and cork oak forest, is one of the most peaceful in the Algarve. The spa water, naturally heated to 32 degrees, is rich in minerals.
