Cabo de Sao Vicente is the southwestern tip of mainland Europe, a dramatic headland where cliffs drop 75 metres to the Atlantic. The lighthouse, one of the most powerful in Europe, marks the point where the southern and western coasts of the Algarve meet. The site has been considered significant since antiquity; the Romans called it Promontorium Sacrum and believed it was where the sun sank into the sea. A small market selling hand-knitted jumpers and local products operates in the car park. Sunsets here are spectacular. The headland is exposed and can be extremely windy.
