Avenida dos Descobrimentos (Avenue of the Discoveries) is the main waterfront road in Lagos, running along the Bensafrim river estuary from the old town towards the marina and the Meia Praia beach. The avenue takes its name from Lagos's role as the departure point for the Portuguese voyages of exploration in the fifteenth century. A statue of Prince Henry the Navigator stands on the avenue. The road provides access to the marina, the Mercado Municipal, and the Praia da Batata beach. The avenue carries both vehicle traffic and pedestrian footfall, and is lined with a mix of commercial premises, restaurants, and residential buildings.
