Avenida Tomas Cabreira is the main road running along the clifftop above Praia da Rocha, Portimao's principal beach and tourist strip. The avenue is lined with hotels, apartment buildings, restaurants, and bars, and forms the backbone of one of the Algarve's most developed tourist zones. Praia da Rocha below is a long, wide beach backed by sandstone cliffs, and the avenue provides vehicle and pedestrian access along its length. At the eastern end, the Fortaleza de Santa Catarina overlooks the Arade river estuary and provides views across to Ferragudo. The avenue is busy throughout the summer season and retains some activity year-round due to the concentration of tourist infrastructure.
